Status Match or Status Challenge

Hyatt no longer offers a pure status match, but they do offer a status challenge called the Hyatt Diamond Trial.  The great thing about this Trial is you will get instant Diamond Status for the duration of the 60 day trial period.

Who is eligable for the Hyatt Diamond Trial?  Anyone who currently has Hilton Gold or Diamond; Marriott Gold or Platinum; Starwood Platinum or Priority Club Platinum.

Once you are approved for the Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond Trial, you will have 60 days to stay 12 nights at Hyatt hotels worldwide to keep the status beyond the trial.   The approval process for the trial is pretty quick, and 60 days is not a long time, so don’t apply for the trial until you are pretty close to your first upcoming stay.

To request the Hyatt Diamond Trial either call the Hyatt service center at 800-228-3360 or email Hyatt through an online form or at goldpassport@hyatt.com requesting the Hyatt Diamond Trial. Within 24 hours you should receive an email from Hyatt that will get you started with the trial.

Can I Earn Starwood Elite Status with my Credit Card?

There are several travel credit cards to help you attain Hyatt Elite Status:

Hyatt Visa from Chase

The Hyatt Visa call will give you automatic Platinum status for as long as you have the card.  It will also help you move toward Diamond Status faster by providing 2 stay credits or 5 night credits toward Diamond status when you spend $20,000 on the card in a calendar year.  Plus an additional 3 stay credits or 5 night credits when you spend $40,000 in a calendar year.

If you already have Platinum status,  this card will come with two free suite upgrades with paid nights.   If you already have Diamond status, it will get you two free nights in a suite.

United MileagePlus Credit Card

The United MileagePlus Club card will provide you with automatic Platinum status at Hyatt as long as you have the card.

Hyatt Gold Passport Elite Status Review

Hyatt Gold Passport is definitely one of the best programs for attaining Elite status.  The only thing keeping from being the clear #1, is the limited number of properties they have compared to Hilton or Marriott.  As far as the benefits go – it is the best.

Some of the unique benefits that make this program so good are:

Four confirmed suite upgrade certificates a year on paid stays.  These are good on paid stays, regardless of the rate you pay, and each one is good for a stay of up to a week.  These can be confirmed at the time of booking.  Other hotel programs will promise the “best room available” in the next category up from what you paid, but rarely give you suites.

Free Breakfast – Most other programs offer this to their top tier members as well, but it does not apply to all properties, is not as good and often does not apply on award stays.   For example, Marriott Platinum status will not get you free breakfast at many of their luxury resort properties, such as the JW Guanacaste Costa Rica.  At Hyatt properties, the concierge lounges are typically much nicer and offer a better quality breakfast than the other properties.  And they even allow you to use the free breakfast feature for room service at some of their high end properties that do not have a concierge lounge, like the Park Hyatt Vendome in Paris.

Easier Qualification for Top Status – Hyatt allows you to get Diamond Status with only 25 stays, compared to Marriott’s 75 night requirement.

High Value of Points for Stays – Hyatt has one of the highest point earning ratios on stays.  Compare this with SPG, which has a great elite program but one of the worst as far as point earning for stays at their properties.

As long as you are not traveling to rural areas where there are no Hyatt properties, the Hyatt Gold Passport program is definitely the one you should focus on for getting top elite status!
